When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them. This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs:) an half shekel shall be the offering of the LORD. Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the LORD. The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls. And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

The phrase "shekel of the Sanctuary" is used repeatedly throughout the Pentateuch, and refers to the fact that the standard weight for Israelite shekels was to be measured and assayed (tested) within the Tabernacle by the Levites, as it later would be in the Temple of Solomon. The shekel's weight was actually related mathematically to the size of the Israelite cubit, the standard of which was extracted from the measurements of the Holy of Holies, the 20 cubit by 20 cubit by 20 cubit perfect cube in the center of the Tabernacle, in which the Ark was kept, and in which only the High Priest Aaron and his sons were allowed to step foot.

But when people speak of "the Sanctuary" and the "Holy of Holies" now, they are usually referring not to the Tabernacle, but to King Solomon's Temple, the crowning achievement of Israel. It would become not only the house of God, and the center of an empire, but a symbol of wisdom and wealth in perfection to future Jews, Christians, Templars, and Freemasons.
